Rally for Ohio's Future, held on June 21 at the Statehouse, hundreds of people gathered to advocate for more funding in the $94B Ohio Senate budget, saying it does not invest in the needs of all Ohioans. Staff from Community Solutions were among them, at this event organized by Advocates for Ohio's Future.
“We want to tell our elected leaders that the as-passed version of the budget does not meet the needs of Ohioans and they can do better,” said Kelsey Bergfeld, the director of Advocates for Ohio’s Future.
Many Ohioans hope to reinstate the governor's original budget, or reinstate proposals from the House's version of the operating budget. Ohioans lost $126 million in SNAP benefits when they went back to pre-pandemic levels in March, with the Senate stripped out additional funding from prior versions.
The protests came from both Democrats and Republicans who say the budget is about more than partisan politics, and the main focus should be on the needs of Ohioans.
