On October 16, Literacy in the H.O.O.D. received the $25,000 Anisfield-Wolf award!
This award honors a nonprofit community organization for outstanding service. Literacy in the H.O.O.D., and its founder, Chrishawndra Matthews, pass out free books to children in the Cleveland area in order to "invest in minds one book at a time." Citing illiteracy rates within Cleveland, she said she came up with the idea after thinking, "how could a traumatized child be at home with a parent who's having difficulty reading and then become a life-long learner themself? I knew I couldn't take on that whole battle and I asked myself, 'What can I do?' And that's when I came up with the idea."
